About the User Guide

The Industrial Location Guidance (ILG) User Guide gives all the operations of the Industrial Location Guidance (ILG) system: from initial system configuration to daily operations.

For a successful customer experience, execute the steps to procedures completion described in the ILG User Guide while working in the ILG software.

Industrial Location Guidance (ILG) is an integrated, stand-alone error proofing system that offers high-level process security for applications ranging from simple to complex.

ILG tracks the exact location of the tool depending on the fasteners position, making sure that the correct fasteners are tightened in the correct sequence. ILG system combines the functionality of a tightening system with position and process control.

The ILG system consists of:

• ILG software

• Positioning hardware

• Tightening controller

• Industrial PC (optional, depending on application)

The ILG service receives the data in real time from the positioning hardware sensors to calculate the tool location in three-dimensional space. Once the tool is located in the specified position, the ILG service selects the tightening program and enable the tool through Open Protocol.
Visual indicators - such as Stacklight, tool LED, or HMI process screen - tell the operator to initiate the tool start.

The positioning hardware includes high precision rotary or linear position sensors that are integrated into the pivot joints or linear guides of a torque arm or similar applications. The sensors connect with the tightening controller or the Industrial PC via a gateway module.
The gateway module communicates with the ILG service through Modbus TCP protocol.
Camera base ILS sensors are available too.
The ILG service communicates with the tightening controller through Open Protocol.
Multiple Atlas Copco tightening controller models are compatible with the system. Different positioning hardware configurations are available to suit the different arm types.

Hardware Structure

It is possible to set up several possibilities of the ILG software because of the high modularity and flexibility of the ILG software. Different connection structures can be used, depending on the requirements.

Controller Connected To Positioning System

The controller and the positioning system are directly connected through TCP/IP. The controller and the positioning system use the normal Ethernet connector of the controller.
This setup uses the Embedded ILG software version running on the controller.

A maximum of one sensor can be connected to a tool.

It is possible to have one or more positioning system connected to the same controller. Example setups:

• ILS Sensor connected to the controller.

• Arm Position System connected to the controller.

• ILS Sensor and Arm Position System connected to the controller.

Industrial Personal Computer Connected over Network to Controller and Positioning System

The tightening controller, sensor gateway and Industrial Personal Computer (IPC) are connected (by Ethernet) to a network.
All devices must be in the same TCP/IP Subnet (for example 192.168.0.XXX).

It is possible to have one or more positioning system connected to the same controller. Example setups:

• ILS Sensor connected to the controller.

• Arm Position System connected to the controller.

• ILS Sensor and Arm Position System connected to the controller.

• Multiple ILS Sensors connect to the controller.
This is called a Multi Sensor Solution

6	IPC - ILG HMI	12	ILS Sensor

Software Structure

There are two versions of the ILG software; Embedded and HMI. The Embedded version runs on a controller and the HMI version runs on an external IPC.

For the configuration of the ILG software, and also for daily operations, a Graphical User Interface (GUI) is needed.
If using the HMI version, it is possible to use the screen of the IPC.
If using the Embedded version, connect a computer to the controller to make a TCP/IP connection.

In any case, it is possible to get to the GUI of the ILG software only through the web interface.

ILG Toolbar

ILG software toolbar is a grouping of commands which are optimized for efficient access.

On the left side of the ILG toolbar, the name of the software - Industrial Location Guidance - appears.

On the right side of the ILG toolbar, it is possible to see the connection status. Besides, it is possible to select the tool which the user can work with, the mode, and the user role. It is also possible to download diagnostic data, select the software language, go to the help page and see information about the software in the three dots menu.

Setting up the Tightening Process

ILG software has no fixed tightening order which must be followed and ILG software offers different methods to support the setup of the tightening process. These methods are not exclusive and can be combined in different ways according to the specific requirements.

In general, to set up a complete tightening process, the user must:

1. Create a process structure - Depending on the application, different groups and positions must be arranged within the tree structure to define the process flow.

2. Set up the general tightenings parameter - Each tightening process is regulated by different specifications, which are valid for several tightening positions. These setting options include, for example, the loosening strategy, the referencing method, or the reject management.

3. Define the enabling and disabling volumes - A tolerance volume is defined around each position that is tightened in the process, which controls the release of the tool. Only if the tool is within the tolerance volume of the position, the tightening tool is enabled.

4. Make the teaching of the tightening positions - The main task of ILG software is to compare the current tool position with the predefined nominal positions. This nominal value is stored as Cartesian coordinates in the positions during the teach process.

Tightening Position Page Buttons

On the Tightening Position page it is possible to add workpieces, groups and positions, and set the settings, the configuration, and the process structure of the tightening positions. The process structure order is shown in the Positions table below the buttons.

The buttons that are visible depend the specific sensor that is connected to the tool selected in the Tool dropdown menu.

For information regarding buttons used for ILP, refer to the Tightening Position Page Buttons chapter in the ILP User Guide.

Creating a Process Structure

ILG software uses a tree structure - shown through the Tightening Positions page - to build tightening processes. This structure has three classes that can have different types, features, and characteristics.

• Workpiece class: the workpiece is the main group and represents one component variant of the user or one tightening process. The workpiece is the start point for each tightening sequence. Only one workpiece is used per process

• Group class: always describes several positions and possibly other groups. The class is responsible for building the structure of the process flows. Their task is to define a sequence for the subordinate positions and groups, and to set higher-level tightening parameters.

The group type can additionally be selected as a level:

  • Level class: A level is an extension of a normal group. It can run its own images for the process visualization. A level is used when the Process / Workpiece has several tightening layers that cannot be visualized in one main picture or require different tightening sequences of the same part.

• Position class: defines a single tightening position with all parameters for that single position.

The construction of a tightening process must always start with the workpiece.
The workpiece can then be structured by making different groups, levels and positions. The user can make as many groups/positions into an existing workpiece group as it is needed. The elements can be put freely, depending on the application.

ILG software visualizes the hierarchical structure - and thus the work sequence of a process - by moving the individual elements in the process list.

Creating a Workpiece or a Group

Compensation for Variable Workpiece Location: Referencing Strategy

In many situations, the workpiece to be processed is located in a location which is not the one that the model - created, for example, after teaching the tightening positions - assumes. Those situations can occur because of the setup of the assembly line, or because of the operation made on a movable table. It is possible to configure ILG software to compensate the variable workpiece location compared to the ILG system, depending on the application.
The compensation functionality is called Referencing.

ILG software gives different options to set up the Referencing:

• Static: the workpiece is introduced in the same location every cycle.
All the Reference Positions boxes on the Advanced tab of the Workpiece Properties dialog box must be empty.

• 1-Point Referencing: the part is introduced in different linear locations. 1-Point Referencing let the part translate linearly across any axes: X, Y, or Z.
A typical example is the assembly line, where the workpiece stops on the station in slightly different positions.
To use 1-Point Referencing for the given workpiece model, enter the ID of 1 tightening position defined for the workpiece as the Reference Position 1 on the Advanced tab of the Workpiece Properties dialog box.
Thus, before any other operation on the workpiece, the operator must pull the tool trigger on this particular position. The referencing can be done with tightening or without tightening. If it is done without tightening the operation does not need to get the tightening result OK.

• 2-Point Referencing: the part is introduced in different linear locations and rotated around one axis.
A typical example is when the workpiece gets at the ILG station on a movable table.

To use 2-Point Referencing for the given workpiece model, give the axis around which the rotation is expected. Then, enter the IDs of the 2 tightening positions defined for the workpiece as the Reference Position 1 and Reference Position 2 on the Advanced tab of the Workpiece Properties dialog box.
Thus, before any other operation on the workpiece, the operator must pull the tool trigger on these particular positions in the specified order. The referencing can be done with tightening or without tightening. If it is done without tightening the operation does not need to get the tightening result OK.

• 3-Point Referencing: the part is introduced in different locations along all axis. 3-Point Referencing let the part translate linearly and rotationally across any axes: X, Y, or Z - all 6 degrees of freedom.

To use 3-Point Referencing for the given workpiece model, enter the IDs of 3 tightening positions defined for the workpiece as the Reference Position 1, Reference Position 2, and Reference Position 3 on the Advanced tab of the Workpiece Properties dialog box.
Thus, before any other operation on the workpiece, the operator must pull the tool trigger on these particular positions in the specified order. The referencing can be done with tightening or without tightening. If it is done without tightening the operation does not need to get the tightening result OK.

Setting Up the 3-Point Referencing Strategy

Setting Up the 3-point Referencing Strategy procedure works best if the 3 points are as far apart as possible in both coordinates of the geometrical plane.

If a reference strategy is used for a workpiece, the process always starts with the referencing. At the beginning of the process, only the reference points on the workpiece appear. After the operator has captured all reference positions, the fastener positions are displayed that are not tightened in the referencing procedure, and can be fastened.

Compensation for Variable Workpiece Location: Dynamic Part Tracking

When the workpiece to be processed is located differently from what is defined in the model created—such as in a moving line—the ILG software running on an ILS Sensor can be configured to compensate for this. This is called Dynamic Part tracking.

Setting Up the Dynamic Part Tracking

Creating a Position

In the simplest situation, a given workpiece model contains just tightening positions.
It is possible to add tightening positions to the workpiece through different procedures.

Manual Creation of the Tightening Positions

Volume Types

Sphere

Like a circle in a two-dimensional space, a sphere is defined mathematically as the set of points that are all at the same distance r from a given point in a three-dimensional space.

The radius defines the size of the sphere.

For example, in the Volume tab of the Position window, enter and select the Enabling Volume parameters. Select Sphere as volume and enter 15mm as radius. Then, select the Same as position check box.
The Disabling Volume parameters are programmed to an upscale percentage (20%): thus, the sphere radius is 20% bigger (18mm).

The tool is enabled when into the Enabling Volume parameters. The tool is disabled when is outside the sphere of the Disabling Volume parameters.
Then, the tool is enabled again only when moved back into the Enabling Volume parameters again.

1	Tool Enabled
2	Tool Disabled
3	Tool Enabled

Cuboid

A cuboid's size is defined by length, height and width.

Cylinder

A cuboid has a

The cylinder has two identical flat circular ends and one curved side.

The radius, height, and depth define the size of the cylinder. These 3 dimensions typically originate from the X / Y / Z position. The direction of the cylinder must also be defined using a vector coordinate. Simple vectors - such as a straight vertical or horizontal cylinder - may be manually programmed.

For instance, setting X=0, Y=0, Z=1 gives a vertical cylinder.
Setting X=1, Y=0, Z=0 gives a horizontal cylinder:

Cone

The cone is similar to the cylinder, but the radius is different in length at each end.

Half-space

The half-space volume is the infinite volume limited by a plane. The plane splits the two infinite volumes into two halves and the plane has a distance to the origin. One of the sides of the plane contains the infinite half-space volume.

Configuring a Position

This video explains how to configure a position.

Bypassing a Position

For more information regarding bypassing, refer to the NOK Result Bypassing chapter.

Teaching Process

Prerequisites

During the Teaching process, nominal positions or target coordinates are assigned to the process model in ILG software. This process defines the geometrical model of a workpiece.
After entering the coordinates, ILG software enables tightening in the correct positions of the active workpiece. Thus, it is very important that the Teaching process is run under optimal conditions.

Before running the Teaching process, make sure that:

• A real workpiece is in the system; the fastening conditions - workpiece geometry, fasteners, and so on - agree with the conditions in normal production.

• The workpiece is optimally positioned in the workspace

• The geometry of the tool is completely mapped within ILG software.

• The fastening sequence of the components is known and is observed during the Teaching process.

• The controller is configured and connected to the ILG software.

Teaching

In ILG software, the Teaching process causes a completely new tightening position along with the new related coordinates.

Three teaching options are possible and works as follows:

• Teaching and creating a new workpiece:if no workpiece is selected, the teaching will create a new workpiece with default parameter values (P-Set, Enabling Volume and Disabling Volume).

• Teaching a workpiece with no positions previously added: the teaching will add positions with default parameter values (P-Set, Enabling Volume and Disabling Volume).

• Teaching a workpiece with positions previously added: the teaching will replace the already existing positions, their coordinates and settings with the default parameters (P-Set, Enabling Volume and Disabling Volume). If the number of positions that are taught are higher that the number that were previously in the workpiece, the teaching will add these additional positions with default parameter values.

The default parameter values for teaching is P-Set=0, Enabling Volume=10 mm shere and Disabling Volume=upscale 10% of enabling volume.

The Teaching process of new workpieces is used for simple process setups, where only 1 workpiece exists. In this case, all the tightening positions are into the only existing workpiece.
If the process has a more complex structure, we recommend to create the workpiece and group structure. Then, perform the Teaching process for the existing groups.

If the Teaching process is repeated for several workpieces, the ILG software changes automatically the workpiece ID number, so that always only unique workpiece IDs exist.

For the specific ILP teaching process, refer to the Teaching the Bolts chapter in the ILP User Guide.

Teach

The Teach process adds one position to the selected workpiece.

Reteach

The Reteach process causes an update of the coordinates of the existing tightening positions in the workpiece/group.
During the Reteach process, it is possible to change only the existing positions in the given workpiece/group. Once reached the defined number of positions within the workpiece/group, pressing the tool trigger has no effect.

If one position is selected in the Positions list, this position will be reteached with updated x, y, z-coordinates.

If a workpiece is selected in the Positions list, all the positions in the workpiece will be retaught with updated x, y, z-coordinates.

Reteach Relative

The Reteach Relative process updates the coordinates of the existing tightening position relatively to a part target. The part target can have one dynamic tag or multiple dynamic tags.
During the Reteach Relative process, it is possible to update the coordinates of only one existing position.

Teaching Operations

Teach Operations

Reteach Operations

Reteach Relative Operations

For more information about dynamic tags and the ILS setup, refer to the ILS Sensor User Guide.

Prerequisites

• Before running the Reteach Relative process, in the workpiece Advanced settings, the dynamic tag Part target Id has to be selected in the dropdown list.

• It can be easier to be 2 people for this procedure: interaction both with the ILG software user interface and the tool is needed.

Teaching Volumes Operations

It is only possible to teach the volumes cylinder and cuboid.

Copying and Pasting

To make the assignment of tightening parameters easier, ILG software gives the possibility to copy parameters of a tightening position / group. The copied parameters can be moved to other groups.
Through ILG software, it is possible to:

• Copy the complete position: creates a copy of the tightening position within the same group or another group.

• Copy the position parameters: copies specific parameters of a tightening position. Thus, the copied parameters are moved to individual positions or to all positions within a group.

To make the Workipieces page running, it is essential to configure the graphical elements. Then, it is important to perform the Image Referencing for each of the workpiece models.

The Workpieces Page Tabs

The Workpieces page has a Bolts tab and a Volumes tab. In the Bolts tab the positions and bolts can be added, edited, deleted or moved to be correct in the workpiece image and the positions can be retaught with new x,y-coordinates. The Volumes tab shows the workpiece element types (position/bolt) and IDs with the selected volumes for the positions.

Selecting Workpiece Model and Image

Typically, the workpiece image uploaded into the ILG software needs a repositioning process to match the real situation at the workstation.

Rotating the Image

To display a process within ILG software graphically, the alignment of the component image must correspond to the real alignment between tool and component. ILG software cannot change image files graphically. Thus, if the image is rotated to the actual process view, this rotation cannot be compensated automatically.

If a deviation between the real and the displayed alignment happens, the Image Rotation feature, in the Workpieces page, gives the option to realign the image.

Use the Image Rotation feature always at the beginning of a graphical process representation. The image is rotated with the help of two interpolation points.

Referencing Images

The Image Referencing feature lets the user scale and put the workpiece image in the ILG software coordinate system. Through the Image Referencing feature, the tightening positions related to the workpiece model and the corresponding points on the workpiece image can be mapped onto each other.

To do the Image Referencing procedure, use the Workpiece page of the ILG software and the tightening tool.

The Image Referencing procedure works best if the 3 points are as far apart as possible and are arranged in a triangle in both coordinates of the geometrical plane, in which the workpiece image is located.

The Image Referencing procedure shows the correct tool position (crosshair) on the workpiece image, while the real tool moves over the real workpiece. Besides, the tightening positions of the workpiece appear as yellow points on the image, depending on the taught positions.

Bolts Tab Operations

The menu on the right can be expanded/collapsed depending on the preference. When the menu is expanded more buttons are visible and it is possible to edit the positions in the table.

Adding a Position in the Bolts tab

Adding a Bolt in the Bolts tab

Edit a Position/Bolt in the Bolts tab

Teach in the Bolts tab

This functionality changes the coordinates in the workpiece according to the new coordinates in the image.

Reteach in the Bolts tab

To reteach multiple positions perform the following step for each position.

Move in the Bolts tab

It is possible to find some distortions in the placement of the tightening positions, especially for bigger workpieces or for images that come from photos of workpieces (rather than technical drawings). This means that the crosshair of the tool placed in the defined tightening position, in reality, is not displayed on the tightening position on the image.

The Moving the Tightening Positions procedure moves the dots that are related to the tightening positions manually. The procedure affects only the display, and not the model.

Test Environment Page

The Test Environment page shows the bolt recognition for the bolts in a selected workpiece.

• Workpiece ID field: where the workpiece is selected by selecting the workpiece id and the checkmark button.

• RESET button: restarts the testing process.

• TEST ALL button: tests the bolt recognition for all the bolts in the workpiece.

• TEST button: test the bolt recognition for a single bolt in the workpiece.

The table shows the result of the bolt recognition:

Message Mapper Page

The Message Mapper page shows a list of already created input and output messages.

The buttons at the top of the Message Mapper page can be used to add messages and handle messages.

• +: adds messages.

• ASSISTANT: creates a set of mappings to handle messages from the tightening tracker module.

In some case it is required to use an ILG connected tool for tightening's that shouldn't be controlled by ILG. Use the message-mapper to send services/disable_workflow and services/disable_fast_tool_lock to prevent ILG from locking the tool after every result generated. (Note that before any tightening's can be performed the Open Protocol must be unlocked and a Pset must be selected).

Message Mapper Assistant

The Message Mapper Assistant creates a default set of mappings to handle messages from the tightening tracker module. The selected actions will decide how the process will be handled.

ILG and Source Batch Behavior

• The batch started workpiece: When the batch ID matches the workpiece alias the workpiece is started.

• The batch selected position: The batch ID enables positions that have batch ID = Pset actual ID (not identifier in source tightening). The ILG workpiece order still matters.

• The batch size and counter is never used in ILG.

• The total number of tightenings in the batch must match the number of positions in the ILG workpiece.

• The batch settings in Power Focus (e.g. increment on NOK, decrement on OK loosening and max consecutive NOK) also need to be considered.

• The option New workpiece finishes the current workpiece and the option Batch number matches workpiece id can be used together. The option currently works with Open Protocol but not with ASDK/ASDK Remote. When ASDK/ASDK Remote is used, all tightenings in batch mode will generate a tc_job_info with the same ID.

• The option Batch number matches workpiece id starts a workpiece that has an ID/Alias that matches the batch ID that is selected on a controller.

• Setting legacy counter changes how the batch is counted which could affect the behavior in ILG.

• The parameter options Skip position on batch increment and Batch counter enables position currently do not work together. Only one of the options should be used, not both.

Configuring a Workplace

This video explains how to configure a workplace.

Position Selection Method

Concept

The Position Selection Method determines the order in which tightening may or must be followed.

Order

Enabled position: When a tool is moved to an enabled position, ILG unlocks the tool and allows operation. In ILG, enabled positions are shown in the blue color.

Disabled position: When a tool is moved to a disabled position, ILG does not allow operation. In ILG, disabled positions are shown in the yellow color.

Position Selection Methods

ILG-Selected

ILG decides the sequence in which tightening must be followed. The positions that are shown in the Tightening Positions menu are followed according to the chosen order.

Groups can be created in the positions list. Groups allow the creation of more detailed orders. The workpiece order applies to bolts and groups that exist one level under the workpiece. Bolts cannot have their own order, only workpieces, groups and levels. For more information on groups and levels, see Creating a Group or Level

Batch-Selected

This method uses a controller to select tightening–position batches to run. The tightening positions are selected by ILG: forced or free order. A workpiece must have the Pset for each bolt set to the batch ID. For example, if the batch ID is 1, the Pset for all bolts in the workpiece must also be 1. A controller batch can contain multiple Psets. If a batch contains multiple Psets, the workpiece should use forced order. For more information on settings that are only available for Batch-Selected, see information about the option Batch counter enables position in Creating a Workplace.

Pset-Selected

Positions are chosen by a system that selects a Pset on a controller. The system could, for example, be a PLC, a MES, or even a batch that runs on a controller. If Pset 1 is selected on a controller, the first position with Pset 1 in ILG is enabled. The method can run in one of these orders:

Forced order: if multiple positions in ILG have Pset 1, the first position in a top–to–bottom list will be enabled. When ILG receives the result, the next position with Pset 1 is enabled.

Free order: all positions in a workpiece that have Pset 1 are enabled.

When using Pset-Selected, it is recommended to configure ILG to not send Psets to a controller.

External-Monitor-Selected

This method uses a third–party system, for example, a PLC or a controller, to select and configure which Psets will be run for which position. With this method, ILG is not used to control when a position can be used. This is handled by the third–party system. The method is similar to Pset-Selected, but it is the Position Number and not the Pset ID in the position that will determine the order in which tightening positions are enabled.

When a position is added to a workpiece, select the Advanced tab and go to the Position No. box. The number that is entered in this box decides when a tightening position will be run.

When using this selection method, it is possible to decide how and if ILG shall select the parameter set for the position. It is done in Setup Mode, on the Tools page, by selecting the Edit button, then in the Advanced section, selecting the Standard Tool CONFIGURE.. button and choosing the preferred Parameter set selection option in the dropdown menu.

Message-Selected

This method requires a tool with an external PLC that is connected by using the Tool API.

Licenses Page

The Licenses page shows active licenses.

The buttons at the top of the Licenses page can be used to generate and upload a licence.

• GENERATE LICENSE REQUEST: generates a request for a new license.

• UPLOAD LICENSE RESPONSE: uploads licenses from a file.

The table below the buttons contains License, Tool, Status, License Type and IP:Port. The License column has toggles to enable/disable licenses.

In order to manage a license provided by the controller in ILG the Tool ID in ILG must match the Name in Virtual Station in the web gui. If there is a match, the Status in the table will be OK. If there is not a match, the Status will be Tool ID Not Matching.

The IP:Port in ILG must match the IP:Port configured in Virtual Station in the web gui. If there is a match the Status in the table will be OK. If there is not a match the Status will be Port Not Matching.

License Types:

• Standard License: full license.

• SQS License: does not allow the user to connect to a controller.

• Provided By Controller: the license is bound to a virtual station and thereby provided by a controller.

Tools Page

The initial configuration Assistant simplifies the basic configuration of the ILG software to set up the communication interface to the sensors and the tightening controller. At the beginning of any system setup, use the assistant to add and configure tools. The assistant can be opened by selecting the + in the top right corner. This can be followed by manual adjustment.

Already existing tools can be edited, deleted and released on this page. The lock for the tool can also be activated or deactivated here.

Considerations during the use of Spindles

The list below states what to be considered when using spindles and StepSync or FlexSystem.

• ILG will not receive the tc_results messages when StepSync and Open Protocol is being used. The ILG process will still work, however the HMI will not show torque and angle results.

• It is recommended to use the same pset for all spindles.

The following information applies if the spindles are using different psets:

  1. If the psets have mixed thread directions (clockwise/counterclockwise), ILG will not read the thread direction correctly in Sync Mode.

  2. If all psets have counterclockwise thread direction: No Mode shall have the same ID number as an existing Pset ID number.

Alternatively, all Mode Ids should be larger than the largest Pset ID.

• If the result of a spindle is NOK the position (and all visualized bolts) will be marked red.

• Rework must be performed on all spindles, it is not possible to perform rework on individual spindles.

Tool Tab

The buttons at the upper-left corner of the Tool tab can be used to make changes to an existing tool, delete a tool, release a tool, lock a tool or reset locks.

• Edit: lets the user make changes to the selected tool.

• Delete: deletes the selected tool.

• RELEASE TOOL: releases the tool with the configured lock.

• LOCK TOOL: locks the tool with the configured lock.

• RESET LOCKS: lock the tool with the configured lock signal and then releases all other available lock signals.

Controller Section

Connection Type Setting

ILG uses one of four communication channels to control each tool, and this setting on the Tool tab is called Connection Types. When creating a tool the Connection Type can be selected depending on the previously selected Controller Type.

For Connection Type configurations, refer to the Configuring the Connnection Types chapter.

Input Groups Setting

The controller can send 8 input signals corresponding to a maximum of 2⁸−1=255 positions. When fewer positions are used, the input signals can be used for several other purposes at the same time.

E.g. [1,2],[3],[6,5] will create three input groups with the corresponding inputs. There will be extra messages for changes in each group individually. So that a group does not update, when another group has an update and vice versa.

Using Input groups makes message mapping on a few inputs usable while some other inputs change randomly. Refer to the chapter Using Input groups in the Message Mapper.

External Start Switch Setting

The external start switch is used to start and stop the tightening of the tool without using the local tool trigger on the tool. The setting for the external start switch can be used to make it active, handle the direction of the tightening/loosening of a screw/nut and set the signal for the direction and the signal for the tool trigger.

• On the controller, the Start tools input signal needs to be bridged to an External monitored input signal.

• On the controller, the Select loosening input signal needs to be bridged to an External monitored input signal.

• Active: A checkmark means that the external start switch is active. Note that an active external start switch signal overrides the local tool trigger signal and the local direction signal.

• Direction Port: The signal number for the direction input signal (External monitored 1 - 8).

• Direction Signal Type: There are two alternatives. The option CCW Selected loosens the screw/nut in a counter-clockwise direction, while the option Loosening Selected works with the Select loosening function on the controller which sets the direction of the loosening according to the thread direction of the currently selected Pset.

• Tool Trigger Port: The signal for the tool trigger.

Configuring the Connnection Types

Configuring OpenProtocol

Configuring ASDK

Prerequisites:

• The controller software system API to communicate with the tightening controller.

• An ILG embedded license per tool.

Configuring ASDK remote

Prerequisites:

• A custom-made protocol to communicate with the tightening controller.

• ILG embedded license.

• If port number 0 is used in ILG the name of the Virtual Station must be the same as the name of the tool in ILG (note that the ILG tool cannot be changed after creation).

By using port number 0 and not the OpenProtocol port the following function will not be available:

• VIN number will not be received from the controller to ILG.

For full support OpenProtocol should also be configured and running on the controller, and the port number in ILG should be the same as the OpenProtocol port number that is configured on the controller.

Advanced Section

Lock Type Setting

The controllers in the Atlas Copco product range have many different lock types. The locks are used to enable or disable the tool.

If a lock is controlled by multiple systems it is the system that is last to set the lock signal that decides if the tool is enabled or disabled.

One lock signal per controlling device is recommended.

It is not recommended to have a lock controlled by multiple systems. This can cause errors where it is hard for the systems to correctly register whether the lock has enabled or disabled the tool and thereby enable and disable the tool as wanted.

For more basic use cases, for example, when ILG is running without being connected to a MES, PLC, or a similar system, it is not needed to set the lock type in ILG.

The available lock types depend on the set Connection Type and the set Controller Type, seen in the table below.

Field specification:

• Tightening/Loosening locks controlled individually: There are locks that are separated to control tightening and loosening individually. This can improve the process safety, e.g. prevent undesired tightenings/loosenings when the tool directions switch is rapidly changed by the operator.

• Internal Signal: The internal signal number (used in the software systems for the controllers Power Focus 6000, Power Focus 8, IxB, PF6 Flex and STRWrench) for the lock signal.

• Open Protocol MID: MID = Message Identifier. ILG will use the MID to control the specific lock.

• Digital Input Number: When MID 0224 and MID 0225 is used (SET/RESET digital input function) then the Digital Input Number specifies which digital input that is used by ILG.

Configuration in ILG

The lock type can be configured per tool in ILG under the advanced section. The default lock is the OpenProtocol Lock.

If the lock type is changed it might be necessary to release the previous lock(s). The RESET LOCKS button on the top of the Tools page will unlock all locks but the configured lock(s) in ILG.

If the Connection Type is changed and the Lock Type previously used is not supported on the new Connection Type, switch the Connection Type to OpenProtocol first and then switch to the preferred Connection Type. Otherwise, the new Connection Type might not be able to unlock the specific lock that was configured.

Self locks

When the Connection Type Open Protocol is used, self locks can be enabled by selecting the Release Self-Lock option.

When self locks are available they should always be used with ILG as they provide a more robust solution for preventing unwanted tightenings/loosenings on the same bolt. This setting will be enabled by default in ILG. If the self lock functionality is not available or enabled on the tool or controller it should be turned off in ILG to prevent unnecessary Open Protocol messages.

When the Connection Type ASDK/ASDK Remote is used the lock Disable Tool in the controller web GUI can be used. It is activated by selecting Configurations in the web GUI and then selecting General Virtual Station.

The controller will lock the tool after any operation with this lock and ILG will be able to unlock it. The benefit of using the Disable Tool lock is that the tool lock latency is reduced compared to when ILG locks the tool, which improves the process safety. The tool unlock speed is not affected by this setting.

The Disable Tool lock can only be used using the Connection Type ASDK/ASDK remote.

ILG will never lock the tool with this lock. The configured lock in ILG will be used.

ASKD/ASDK remote is only available on the controllers in the list below and requires ILG embedded to be running on the controller.

• Power Focus 6000

• Power Focus 8

• IxB

• PF6 Flex

• STRWrench

Geometry Tab

The Geometry tab allows for configuration of the physical geometry of the tool and of the mounting. The ILG software uses this geometry model to calculate the position of the tool in Cartesian coordinates. The result of the geometry is the tool position in X, Y, and Z and also its rotation in rX, rY, and rZ.

In the case of ILS, it is only the distance from tool tag to tool tip.

In the case of ILA, it is the whole arm including the tool from base mounting point to tool tip.

Regardless of whether the configuration assistant is used or a completely new geometry is created, it is possible to make manual adjustments to the geometry to create a complete geometry.
For this purpose, ILG software gives an operating environment in the Geometry tab, which makes it possible to set up geometries for all types of systems.

In the case that spindles are used, it is possible to configure a Spindle Geometry in this tab.

Creating the Geometry Model

When creating or adjusting the geometry model, always proceed beginning with the origin of the coordinate system, thus from the fixed suspension of the ILG hardware.

ILG software has three basic geometries for the creation or extension of a geometric model:

• Fixed Segment: rigid element for describing fixed geometric elements.

• Rotational Sensor: modeling of a rotational axis detected by an angle encoder or inclination sensor.

• Linear Sensor: modeling of a linear axis captured by a linear sensor.

The geometrical model provides the three basic geometries in a given sequence.
The Geometry tab displays the geometry elements as a list.
The buttons at the top of the geometries list can be used to add new geometry elements or make changes.

• Add: adds a new geometry element to the geometry list.
If you select an existing geometry element, the new geometry element appears in front of the selected geometry element.
If no geometry element is selected, the system adds the new geometry element at the end of the list.

• Edit: opens the editing menu for the selected geometry element.

• Delete: deletes the selected geometry element.

• Rotate: opens a Rotate geometry window where it is possible to rotate of the geometry on the x-, y-, and z-axis simultaneously.

• VERIFY: verifies the geometry of the tool. For more information, refer to the Verifying Geometry chapter.

How to Create a Geometry Model

Different configurations must be made, depending on the selected geometry type:

• For a Fixed Segment:

  • Geometric expression of the element in millimeters (XYZ direction).

  • Color of the element in the geometric model: we recommend the usage of different colors for the neighboring segments.

  • Condition for the segment (if needed). In the Configuration mode, on the Tightening Postions page, in the Workpiece window, on the Advanced tab, the condition is set for the workpiece.

• For a Rotation Sensor:

  • Rotation axis of the sensor: the rotation axis of the sensor can be defined by 1 or 0 in the respective axis XYZ.

  • Rotation vector of the sensor: the direction of rotation is given by + or -.

  • Sensor: it says which of the installed sensors provides the measured values for the respective direction of movement.

  • Color of the element in the geometric model (if needed).

  • Condition for the sensor (if needed). In the Configuration mode, on the Tightening Postions page, in the Workpiece window, on the Advanced tab, the condition is set for the workpiece.

• For a Linear Sensor:

  • Movement axis of the sensor: the movement axis of the sensor can be defined by 1 or 0 in the respective axis XYZ.

  • Movement vector of the sensor: the direction of movement is given by + or -.

  • Sensor: it says which of the installed sensors provides the measured values for the respective direction of movement.

  • Color of the element in the geometric model (recommended).

  • Condition for the sensor (if needed). In the Configuration mode, on the Tightening Postions page, in the Workpiece window, on the Advanced tab, the condition is set for the workpiece.

The geometry list shows all the geometry segments in a specific order. ILG software considers the exact order of the geometry segments during the operations. Add new geometry segments at the bottom of the list, after the default segments.

Rotate the Geometry

Rotating the Geometry will transform the complete geometry of the tool.

How to create a Spindle Geometry

A preview of the spindles in relation to each other is visible to the right of the Spindle Geometry table.

Verifying Geometry

Use the Verify Geometry feature to optimize geometry that is entered in ILG. This is done by physically moving a tool that is registered in ILG. Then, ILG performs calculations and presents optimized geometry suggestions.

The Verify Geometry feature can only be used when ILG is connected to Industrial Location Arms or Industrial Location SpotPoint.

The feature requires physical access to a tool that is registered in ILG. The feature also requires physical access to the area where the tool is used.

Opening Verify Geometry in ILG

The window shows a real-time representation of the tool. For example, move the physical tool to see real-time movement in ILG.

The window contains three different views of the selected tool: the top view, the front view, and the right-side view. These views represent what has been entered in the model tab. For information on the model tab, see Model Tab.

Using Verify Geometry

Model Tab

To facilitate and to validate the adjustment of the geometry, ILG software gives a 3D visualization of the tool geometry. The visualization consists of three screens, each showing a different viewing direction, able to capture every tool movement. The division of the viewing directions is determined by the three main planes of the coordinate system (X/Y, X/Z, Y/Z).

Real-time tool movement enables the user to validate the tool configuration is in the correct direction, and make sure that the rotation and movement is correct.

To get the full view of the tool model, select the Fit button, and the picture automatically scales to the actual tool position. The scaling in all three planes is independent from each other.

Changes in the configured geometry are immediately displayed in the Model tab. This real-time visualization makes possible to quickly verify the model and adjust movements between the geometric model and the real tool.

To validate the model, always make sure that the geometry is correct by moving the tool and watching the model on the screen. If a direction moves different than expected, then change the direction vector sign of the corresponding sensor entry.

Note that different elements of the model require different views for their verification. For example, a sensor that covers a vertical movement, cannot be verified by looking at the XY view. This is why ILG provides views in all three main planes of the 3D Cartesian system.

The Part Targets tab shows the targets and tags for the ILS Sensor parts. The tab is used when the assembly object is not in the same position relative the ILS Sensor.

The buttons at the upper-left corner of the Part Targets tab can be used to add, make changes to, or delete an existing target or tab.

• ADD TARGET: lets the user add a target.

• ADD TAG: lets the user add a tag.

• RETEACH: Reteaches the coordinates of the target.

• Edit: lets the user make changes to the selected target or tag

• Delete: deletes the selected target or tag.

Adding a Part Target

The physical placement of tags relative to bolt positions must always be the same.

Adding a Multi-tag Target

Using one single part target can create accuracy errors due to incorrect rotation measurements. The bolt positions are then only referenced in relation to one single part target.

If the single part target cannot be placed close enough to the bolt locations it can be necessary to use the Multi-tag Target function.

The physical placement of tags relative to bolt positions must always be the same.

The Multi-tag part target function results in a reference frame which is only based on the x. y, z positions of the part target tags.

The Multi-tag part target function requires having at least three unique tag IDs that are always visible to the ILS sensor during operation of the workpiece.

Workspace Tab

The Workspace tab shows the targets and tags for the ILS Sensor workspace.

The buttons at the upper-right corner of the Workspace tab can be used to start and stop, or teach and clear all system datum.

• START: Starts a visualization of the ILS Sensors and the tags.

• STOP: Stops the visualization of the ILS Sensors and the tags.

• TEACH ALL SYSTEM DATUM: Finds the common origin in the xyz-plane for the tags.

• CLEAR ALL SYSTEM DATUM: Clears the common origin in the xyz-plane for the tags.

Dual Sensor Teaching

When using two ILS sensors it is necessary to teach a common origin. The following prerequisites apply for dual sensor teaching.

• Three tags with unique ID numbers.

• The tags have a space of a minimum 200 mm apart from each other.

• The tags are horizontal.

• The tags are positioned in the common field of view (FOV) of the sensors.

• The common FOV is at least 300x300 mm.

• The tags are placed near or on the same plane as the one that will be used for bolt positions in ILG.

If all bolts are on a horizontal plane the tags for dual sensor teaching could be tilted around 5 to 10 degrees. Note that it is the plane created by the tags that should be tilted and not the tags themselves.

IPG Page

This view is only used to connect an IPG projector to ILG. To create a projection for a workpiece, see Creating a Workpiece.

For information about managing the IP address, the calibration file and the calibration, refer to the IPG Page Configuration chapter.

The IPG page shows the IPG projectors.

The buttons in the upper–left corner of the Projectors tab can be used to add, edit, delete and calibrate a projection, project a tool position, project a shape and stop a projection. These sections describe the contents of each section in the IPG page.

Adds a projector. Enter values for these boxes:

• Serial Number: the serial number of the projector.

• IP: the IP address of the projector. The default IP address is 192.168.100.127. The IP address is always static and has to be changed to fit into the network's subnet.

• Projector type: the type of projector.

  • If you use IPG L, IPG L Plus, IPG L Vision, or IPG L Vision Plus as projector, enter tvam

• Calibration file: a calibration file is required to use a projector in ILG. If the IPG has an embedded calibration file, the field can be left empty.

Hardware Setup for ILS and IPG

Ideal ILS and IPG Setup

For the best result the ILS module and IPG module should be mounted next to each other looking directly at the product.

The image of the ideal setup below is one example of how the ILS and IPG can be placed. Other setups may also work, as long as the ILS and IPG are placed close to each other and their field of view are overlapping.

Distorted Projections

If the IPG module and ILS module cannot be placed next to each other the projections might be distorted:

• If ILS module is placed at a 45° angle relative to the IPG module, then the further away the projection is from the IPG module the more distorted/elongated the projections will appear.

E.g. the ILS module and the IPG module are placed as can be seen in the image below, then the projection of a circle will appear correct when it is located near the IPG module (projection A) and distorted/elongated when it is located further away from the IPG module in a shape of an ellipse (projection B).

• As the angle between the ILS and IPG approaches 90 degrees the resulting projection will be very distorted and in most case not usable.

Compensating for the Setup

In some cases it is possible to compensate for this distortion. It is possible to do the following to compensate:

• Create a system datum: make sure that the tag/s are facing the IPG projector. If the system datum is created by three tags, the order of the tags must be a positive Z-axis pointing at the IPG device. Consider using the right-hand rule for the coordinate system.

• In some cases, e.g. for lines and square projections, the distortion can be improved by adjusting the specific projection parameters such as projection size and direction.

Compensation for Inverted Projections

If no system datum is configured when using absolute positioning or if no part tracking is used then projections will be shown incorrectly. To make sure that the projection is shown in the correct orientation the following actions need to be taken for ILS and IPG:

1. Defining the coordinate system for ILS correctly

2. Calibrating the IPG

3. Teaching the positions

Definition of the Coordinate system for ILS

ILG defines the workspace coordinate system using three uniquely identified tags, arranged in an L-shaped configuration:

• Tag 1 - Origin: defines the coordinate system origin (0.0.0)

• Tag 2 - x-axis reference point: defines the positive direction of the x-axis (from the orgin)

• Tag 3 - xy-plane reference point: defines the direction of the y-axis and established the xy-plane.

From these three reference points, ILG calculates the full 3D coordinate system, including the z-axis, using the right-hand rule.

Axis Orientation

• X-axis: should point to the right

• Y-axis should point upward

• Z-axis should point outward towards the ILS sensor

For instructions to ensuring a projection in the correct orientation, refer to the Enabling correct Projection Orientation chapter.

Logging Tab

The Logging tab shows the path to change logs and the maximum total file size of all change logs.

A change log is a record of changes that have been made in ILG. One log file is saved per day in the folder C:\ProgramData\AtlasCopco\IndustrialLocationGuidance on the computer where ILG is installed. The current file in use is named change.log. Older files get .YYYYMMDD added to the end of the file name, for example, a complete file name could be change.log.20250616.

Destination path: by default, this is C:\ProgramData\AtlasCopco\IndustrialLocationGuidance on the computer where ILG is installed. If a new path is entered and the folder does not already exist, the folder is created.

Maximum total file size: by default, this is 16 MiB. If the total size of all change logs exceeds the value, the oldest files are deleted until the total file size matches the value.

Modules with Old Configurations

The ILG configuration file contains the modules activation state.

If a configuration is restored with modules in deactivated state, the modules will not stop running instantly. However, they might not be started the next time ILG starts. It is important to check the Modules page, if a configuration is restored, to make sure that all modules are running and that they are activated.

If an old configuration is loaded and ILG adds new modules, it can be necessary to manually activate these new modules that have the Status "New". For instructions for activating modules, refer to the Activating a Module with an old Configuration chapter.

It is not recommended to use ILG with modules not running, however in some cases it can be possible. For cases where it can work, see the list below.

Process Safety

It is important to have good tightening programs or Psets with reasonable torque and angle limits.

Tightening's that finish quickly, also called "rehits", can be a source of errors in the process. In many cases these types of tightenings can be avoided by using a multistep Pset. If this is not possible and the quick tightening sequence causes problems, it can be necessary to add a short waiting step of approximately 0.8 - 1.6 s at the end of the Pset.

The Self-locking Function in the Controller

To ensure a safe process in all cases it can be necessary to enable a self-locking function in the controller. The self-lock will in most cases be much faster compared to ILG in locking the tool as no signal transmission is required. The self-locking function is supported with release 3.10.11+.

Basic Setup

Follow the steps in this guide to get started with a basic setup of the ILG software. For more information on each step consult the relevant sections in the ILG User Guide
